IU International University of Applied Sciences has expanded its AI-powered assistant Syntea into a broader learning companion designed to support over 80,000 distance learning students throughout their studies.
The updated platform combines AI tutoring, learning organization, and management tools into one interface. IU says the system is designed to help students who balance education with work, family responsibilities or irregular study schedules stay engaged and make consistent progress.
An AI platform that combines tutoring and learning organizations
Syntea is now available as a standalone platform with a chat-based interface. This allows students to access learning support, retrieve documents, download certificates, and track progress throughout the course.
The system also offers multiple learning formats such as interactive dialogues, quizzes, podcasts, and visual explanations, allowing students to choose how they approach course content. Students can upload their documents for analysis, interact with the assistant through voice input, and receive suggestions for next learning steps based on their current progress.
Unlike many general-purpose AI tools that simply provide answers, this system prompts users with follow-up questions designed to support deeper understanding and identify gaps in knowledge. Usage data shows that engagement with the enhanced version is increasing. IU reports a 4x increase in average usage time compared to previous versions.
Survey data suggests improved test preparation
Initial results from student surveys indicate that the updated platform may be helping learners prepare for assessments and understand course content.
More than 70% of respondents said the new version helps them prepare for exams, understand course content better, and study more efficiently compared to traditional study formats.
“IU International University of Applied Sciences CEO Sven Schutt, Ph.D. “Syntea has fundamentally changed the way many students learn, and this is also supported by positive feedback from students. At the same time, by using Syntea every day, they learn to use AI competently and thoughtfully, which is a clear advantage in the job market.”
Designed for students aiming to balance work and family
IU says the system is specifically designed to accommodate the realities of distance learning students, many of whom are juggling work and family commitments alongside their studies. According to the university, more than half of distance learning students work full-time and nearly one-third have children. The platform has been developed by IU’s AI product team in collaboration with faculty and students since early 2022.
Quintus Stierstorfer, senior director of AI products at IU International University of Applied Sciences. “From the beginning, our goal has been to design learning in a way that fits different life realities.
“Many people use this tool regularly for this very reason, because it actually helps them learn more reliably and more efficiently, even under difficult circumstances such as work or family commitments. Syntea thus plays a central and complementary role in education by optimally supporting the self-directed learning process.”
Student feedback highlights how the system is used in everyday learning.
“The new Syntea has completely changed things for me,” said Bianca Kroll, a bachelor’s student majoring in social media at IU. “Before, studying was like a mandatory program. I would read a script, highlight it, and hope something would stick. Since Syntea has been involved, it feels like interactive tutoring.”
“I’m very excited about the opportunity to be a part of this program,” said Nadine Zettl, a medical assistant and health administration graduate at IU. “Without Syntea, I would have actually had to drop out. Learning from scripts alone doesn’t work for me when I’m constantly interrupted by childcare and daily life. With Syntea, I don’t have to spend years reading where I left off and can pick up whenever I want. If I had three kids, I would have been desperate.”
First introduced in 2023, the platform supports tasks ranging from exam preparation and flashcard creation to document searches and progress tracking. IU says further features and mobile apps are planned as the system continues to evolve.
