Tokyo, Japan, March 2, 2026 — NTT Docomo, Inc. and NTT, Inc. successfully demonstrate low-latency AI video analysis using in-network computing (INC)*5 INC Edge allows you to connect remotely distributed GPU resources and 5G networks via IOWN APNs.
In this demonstration, AI inference was directly controlled from the network via INC Edge implemented on the 5G core network. With this configuration, you can now use GPU resources remotely connected via IOWN APN to analyze video data sent from your device with minimal delay.
The results will be exhibited at the following locations:
MWC Barcelona 2026. Docomo and NTT will continue to verify and standardize INC technology that supports the spread of simple devices, with the aim of realizing a network that can maximize the potential of AI and robots in the 6G era.
An edge function implemented on the 5G core network that connects the 5G network and IOWN APN and enables AI inference through network control integrated with communication. INC Edge consists of a DPU offload distributed UPF (dUPF) that connects and integrates the 5G network, IOWN APN, INC, and an AI proxy that splits AI inference into preprocessing and execution stages and forwards the preprocessed data to remote GPU resources via IOWN APN to enable distributed inference.
Optical network infrastructure based on the IOWN concept provides ultra-low latency, high bandwidth, and low power consumption. In this demo, it was used to connect distributed remote GPU resources to a 5G network with low latency and high stability.
The process by which AI applies learned knowledge to new data, such as images or audio, to generate predictions or decisions.
As of March 2, 2026. According to Docomo and NTT research. The demonstration was successfully completed within the required delay thresholds specified by ISO/TS 15066, which outlines safety requirements for collaborative robots, under certain conditions such as distance between robot and human and speed of human movement.
A technology concept that integrates application layer processing and network data transfer control to provide high-performance services while reducing latency and device power consumption. The network actively manages where and how processing is performed, offloading workloads to accelerators and computing resources within the network, reducing the strain on devices.
