At the University of Manchester, researchers are using artificial intelligence to bring welding into the digital age. Their project combines advanced computer simulations and machine learning models to optimize welding results and spot stresses that can occur during the process.

Instead of relying on trial and error, engineers and welders can now virtually explore designs, identify potential defects before they occur, and ensure stronger, safer structures over time.

Thanks to the team's approach, what once required hours of detailed simulation and physical testing can now be evaluated instantly.

Researcher Zeyuan Miao explains, “By combining advanced simulation and alternative machine learning models, we automate and accelerate the design of welding processes. Our approach reduces trial and error, minimizes defects, reduces development time, and brings intelligent decision-making directly to the welder.”
