play lab launches AI Lab Schools, a new 24-month program aimed at supporting up to 20 schools leadership team We designed and launched an “AI-integrated” school model, with the first cohort expected to start in July 2026.
This effort comes as more school systems experiment with generative AI, but still face practical questions about what to change in scheduling, staffing, assessment, and the “grammar” of daily learning.
In a post on LinkedIn, Playlab wrote: “We are recruiting a team of 20 people to design and launch a school model that reimagines school for the age of AI.”
What is Playlab building and who can apply?
Playlab describes itself as a nonprofit organization that helps educators and influence organizations build AI-powered tools and experiences, and says it provides public infrastructure for researchers to study the impact of AI on education, leveraging open data to support responsible open source AI efforts.
AI Lab Schools has two participation tracks.
-
A new start: A team building new schools and learning environments “from the ground up” with the goal of “launching a fully operational AI-integrated learning environment by fall 2027.”
-
pivot: Leaders of existing schools (district, charter, private, or small) are planning a “fundamental structural shift” with the stated goal of implementing a model redesign that “shifts power to the learner.”
Applicants must apply as a core team of two to four leaders with decision-making authority regarding scheduling, staffing, and budget. Playlab also requires “evidence of action.” This means submitting existing AI tools or solutions as evidence that teams are beginning to experiment with innovation, student agency, and AI in their contexts.
Program structure, requirements and selection schedule
Playlab positions the program as a research and development incubator rather than a professional development series, with quarterly in-person crash courses, monthly strategy meetings, and one-on-one coaching. The group said participants will use Playlab’s platform to create custom AI tools, run short-term pilots, and publicly share their learnings as part of an “open source commitment.”
The program is described as tuition-free, with travel, lodging and meals covered by Playlab for quarterly in-person intensive classes, and includes two years of access to the platform. Participating teams must set aside at least $10,000 in their own budget for post-program support, including software costs and professional learning.

What Playlab says it wants to change in school design
Playlab configures AI across instructional materials as an infrastructure that can reduce friction in operations and feedback loops, while encouraging schools to redesign core structures rather than bolting tools onto existing systems. Design areas articulated in the program include AI-integrated pedagogy, subject-driven learning, and “boundaryless” classrooms, as well as mastery-based progression, portfolios, and a move toward measurement beyond one-time tests.
Playlab clearly points out that traditional measures such as standardized reading and math scores remain important for transparency and equity, but argues that they do not capture the broader outcomes tied to student well-being, relationships, and human skills.
ETIH Innovation Award 2026
The ETIH Innovation Awards 2026 is now open and recognizes education technology organizations that are driving measurable impact across K-12, higher education, and lifelong learning. The award welcomes applications from the UK, the Americas and overseas, and applications will be assessed on the basis of evidence of achievement and practical application.
