In American agriculture today, especially in specialty crops, the debate about AI is not about gadgets and hype. It depends on the survival of family farms and rural communities. Labor shortages, affordability, and tremendous pressure on medium-sized and larger operations are forcing producers to ask difficult questions: “Can this farm feed the next generation?”
While AI hype in other industries has sparked fears of job losses, the reality is very different inside the farm gate.
Physical AI is one of the few ways to actually give producers a path forward. Create a human-led, AI-assisted workforce, help make operations economic again, and enable the next generation to build profitable and sustainable businesses on the same land. Automation is about keeping these producers in business, not replacing them.
Producers need tools that allow them to redeploy their workforce to safer, higher-value roles. Physical AI enables a single operator to monitor multiple machines, opening up possibilities for:
- Tech-savvy young operators, many in their 20s, may not have grown up with tractors, but they are now running self-driving machines with “video game”-level intuitive controls.
- Existing employees in the community can upskill into high-paying, high-quality jobs managing and maintaining these systems.
- The next 4‑H and FFA generation wants to stay in agriculture and apply their high-tech skills to the work they know and love.
Introducing automation is here
The good news is that hiring is at a tipping point. The technology readiness level is high enough and the cost of key components has come down enough that physical AI is no longer a science project. This is a useful tool for actual operations.
For example, we focus on layering autonomy onto proven platforms like the Agtonomy-enabled Kubota M5 narrow diesel specialty tractor, rather than forcing producers into entirely new, unproven machines. Producers already know how to operate and maintain M5. Adding Agtonomy’s physical AI stack turns Agtonomy into an autonomous workhorse without disrupting everything else about your operations.
Equally important, we’re not looking for an interface that looks like an engineering console, but one that smartphone producers already use every day. If we expect producers to adopt this technology, we have to meet them where they are and stop making them feel like they need to code an API just to get their equipment to work together.

Why dealers are the missing piece in the agricultural automation systems revolution
Dealers are more than just distributors at the end of the pipeline. They are system integrators and strategic partners that can make or break adoption by growers.
The industry has spent years perfecting the technology, bringing costs within range, and demonstrating automation in the field. However, we have hardly invested enough in preparing the dealer channels and broader ecosystems that need to sell, finance, support and keep these systems up and running over the long term.
The real bottleneck now is not whether autonomy works. It’s whether the channel is prepared or not. When we talk about a “systems” approach to automation, we mean designing for workflow, uptime, support, and lifecycle economics. Dealers are at the center of it all.
Kubota has achieved this by investing in programs such as the Kubota Tech and Engine Academy. Kubota Tech and Engine Academy is a training program that brings the latest, high-quality curriculum to trade schools and dealer networks. These OEM-supported programs combine online instruction with hands-on experience to strengthen fundamental mechanical, electrical systems, diagnostics, and engine skills.
As equipment continues to evolve, with more sensors, electronics and software layered on top of proven platforms, these strong technology foundations will be essential to support the next generation of machines, including more automated connectivity systems.
On the producer side, we advocate moving from a single technology mindset to a workflow mindset. Autonomous tractors themselves are not very useful. That value comes from end-to-end workflows like spraying, mowing, and tilling that integrate autonomy, implements, data, and decision-making. This requires people working together across the enterprise, with dealers in between as trusted integrators.
Achieving the system-wide vision requires two things that we still lack. It’s about true interoperability between OEMs and real-world education for everyone who has to make this happen every day.

Solve interoperability to realize your complete vision of agricultural automation
This requires more open collaboration and real-world education. That means working with partners to combine strengths, rather than trying to build everything in-house. In practice, this means supporting systems and technologies that can operate in parallel on the farm, allowing mixed fleets to work together rather than apart.
We are already seeing how systems approaches are realized in the field. Demo days and field events show growers, regulators, and partners exactly how autonomous and conventional equipment work together in real vineyards, orchards, and fields. Dealer and Technician Training will build the confidence and capacity local dealers need to responsibly support these platforms, while outreach to young producers, 4-H, FFA, and similar programs, combined with welding, shop, and mechanic training, will help develop the next generation of operators and dealer technicians who will service increasingly sophisticated equipment over time.
After all, this is not about selling more robots or AI. It’s a vision to restore America’s vibrant rural communities, multigenerational family farms, and strong specialty crop sectors.
Physical AI and automation are important tools to secure that future and create a better life for rural areas. If we as an industry value open collaboration, invest in preparing our dealers and employees, and meet producers where they are, automation will not be disruptive. It will improve the success of American agriculture and encourage the next generation to want to participate in agriculture.
