The Pentagon has designated AI company Anthropic as a “supply chain risk,” restricting its technology’s use in U.S. military contracts despite its alleged role in operations related to the Iran war.
President Donald Trump last week called Anthropic a “radical left” company and ordered government agencies to immediately stop using its tools after the fast-growing AI company announced it would refuse to lift guardrails aimed at preventing things like mass surveillance of Americans.
The “supply chain risk” label confirmed in Anthropic’s statement takes effect immediately and prohibits government contractors from using the company’s technology for U.S. military operations. The company’s Claude platform has played a key role in the US offensive against Iran. wall street journal and washington post Reported.
But CEO Dario Amodei said in a statement that companies can still use Claude for projects unrelated to the Department of Defense. He reiterated that the company will challenge this designation in court.
Amodei also apologized for an internal memo published Wednesday by technology news site The Information. In a memo written last Friday, he said one reason Pentagon officials don’t like the company is that “we don’t admire Trump like a dictator.”
