The Department of Defense has tapped a former DOGE official to lead its AI efforts.
The Pentagon on Friday named a computer scientist who supported billionaire Elon Musk’s government reform efforts last year and promoted white supremacist and misogynist hate online as chief data officer.
The Pentagon said in a social media post that Gavin Kreiger’s new role will be “at the center of the department’s most ambitious AI efforts” and will focus on “the day-to-day coordination and execution of the department’s AI projects, working directly with America’s most advanced AI labs in support of the warfighter.”
The Pentagon did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for further comment.
Kriger expressed controversial views in social media posts between October 2024 and January 2025, reposting content from white supremacist Nick Fuentes and self-proclaimed misogynist Andrew Tate.
The Pentagon’s use of AI has been in the spotlight after weeks of a bitter dispute with Anthropic over guardrails for how the military can use AI tools, leading to the Trump administration’s decision last week to remove the company and replace it with OpenAI.
