Pan Xiaofeng, a deputy member of the National People’s Congress and director of the Institute of Scientific Development of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that China is in the top tier in the development of AI and even takes the lead in some fields.
“China’s success in AI is based on its existing scientific and technological capabilities,” Ban told China Perspective in an exclusive interview. “China, on the other hand, has a particular focus on using applications to drive innovation.”
Driven by a huge domestic market and the world’s richest application scenario, China has firmly established itself as a global leader in AI adoption, he pointed out.
Pan cited the use of AI large models as a key indicator, noting that China has already surpassed the United States and is almost twice as powerful as the United States.
“This shows that China is ahead in this regard in terms of application-driven development,” he said.
Pan acknowledged existing gaps in areas such as high-end chips and base model architecture. However, he expressed confidence that continued application-driven innovation will accelerate upstream technological breakthroughs over time.
“The development of AI is now entering a critical stage of large-scale implementation and application,” Pan said. “At this stage, China should be at the forefront of the world. In applied fields, it is on par with the United States, maybe even slightly ahead. There is still a gap to be filled in independent innovation, but China has chosen the right path.”
He added that this year’s Spring Festival celebrations showcased the achievements of China’s application-driven AI development and gave the public clear expectations for future technological advancements.
