Google is a relative latecomer when it comes to AI notifications, as brands like Apple and Motorola have already rolled out similar features. However, user reactions are mixed, with some reporting inaccurate and unhelpful results. Now, Google is finally rolling out its AI notification summary for Pixel users, giving it a chance to prove that slow and steady wins the competition.
This feature works on notifications from popular messaging apps, condensing long chats into more digestible content. Everything is handled on-device, but the feature is disabled by default and must be enabled manually if you want to see Android’s AI notification summary. Here’s how to do this and customize the functionality to your liking.
Who can use AI notification summaries (and how they work)
Google added AI notification summaries to Android 16 with Pixel Drop in December 2025. Notably, this feature is only available on Google Pixel 9 and Pixel 10 series smartphones, excluding Pixel 9a.
Since the summarization is done on-device, the Pixel 9a’s small 8GB RAM is probably not enough to power this tool. This also ensures that the content of the notification is not sent to Google. Additionally, the summary is only available in English.
Notification Summary is designed to work with long messages and group chats from messaging apps like Google Messages, Android Messages, and WhatsApp. In some cases, AI summaries are not generated because they are not targeted at short texts. The AI summary is only generated when the screen is temporarily turned off and is not displayed while the phone is in use.
When a notification is summarized using AI, a glowing icon appears next to the generated text. Tap the summary to see the entire message.
It’s worth noting that another AI feature for notifications, Notification Organizer, debuted alongside AI Summary. If you want to use both AI features together, here is a complete guide to using Notification Organizer.

AI notification summaries in Android 16 are turned off by default. Enabling AI-powered summaries is as easy as toggling a toggle in your Android notification settings. However, there is room for customization as you can choose which apps’ notifications you want the AI to summarize.

Overview of using Android AI notifications
AI notification summaries in Android 16 are turned off by default and are highly customizable, giving you full control over when to use AI notification summaries. If you receive a lot of long messages or have an active group chat that’s hard to keep track of, it might be worth turning on summary notifications. A short and simple AI overview lets you know if there’s anything you need to pay attention to.
However, the summaries are generated by AI and can be inaccurate. It may be worth disabling these summaries for certain apps where accuracy is important. You can turn off these summaries completely if you don’t find them useful.
