You may have heard that OpenAI has discontinued its Sora AI video generation tool. However, this does not mean that this is the end of the line for AI video generation in general.
Sam Altman’s company announced the surprising move Tuesday afternoon, coinciding with Disney ending its big-money partnership with OpenAI.
The nature of this announcement made it seem like, at least from the outside looking in, things were now moving quickly inside OpenAI. In other words, it’s not yet clear when Sora will completely shut down and what that means for your work. In the X post announcing the decision, the Sora account simply said, “We’ll be sharing more details soon, including timelines for our apps and APIs, as well as details about saving your work.”

Okay then! While OpenAI irons out all the details, for those who really like using Sora, it’s time to consider other alternatives for AI video generation. Here are some easy options.
Google Veo 3
The most mainstream option will be Google’s Veo 3 model, which Mashable called “shockingly realistic” when it launched last year. It can produce better-looking videos than most other models, but obviously none are free. You’ll need one of Google’s paid AI plans. This includes enhanced Gemini features, access to Nano Banana, and more. These aren’t the most expensive ones in the world, starting at $7.99 per month, but you have to ask yourself if you want to pay a monthly fee for the ability to generate videos. That question will come up again when looking for a Sora replacement.
Luma Ray 3
Speaking of money, Luma’s Ray3 model is also known for producing realistic, high-quality video, but it comes at a cost. It’s quite expensive compared to Veo 3. The cheapest plan costs $30 a month, so the Veo 3 is a steal by comparison. That said, Ray3 has a wealth of editing tools, native 1080p video generation, and other extra features that might make it worth the price depending on what you do with it.
