OpenAI plans to combine the ChatGPT app, Codex coding platform, and its browser into a single desktop “super app.” This move is aimed at simplifying the user experience and reducing friction caused by using multiple, fragmented platforms. However, management believes this will streamline resources and allow the company to maintain quality standards and respond more quickly to competitors such as Anthropic. Greg Brockman will become president and temporarily oversee the product overhaul and the organizational changes needed to make it happen.
Meanwhile, Fidji Simo will lead the sales team and prepare for the market launch of new integrated applications. In this regard, Simo told employees in an internal memo:
“We realized we were spreading our efforts across too many apps and stacks and needed to simplify them.”
“That fragmentation slowed us down and made it difficult to reach the quality standards we wanted.”
Executives said the best hope is that consolidating the company’s tools into one app will streamline resources as OpenAI seeks to fight increasing competition from rival Anthropic. Simo’s internal memo acknowledges that spreading efforts across too many different apps and stacks is slowing the company’s growth.
Earlier this year, OpenAI released a native application for its Codex coding tool to solidify its presence in the AI market. Nevertheless, this move follows the previous release of the desktop tool, which OpenAI is now incorporating into its main ecosystem to strengthen its AI code generation footprint.
