After weeks of merciless hype, the GPT-5 is finally here.
Openai officially released the highly anticipated new model on Thursday. This is the latest version of the company's flagship chatbot, ChatGpt, and is the most widely used AI model on the market.
Openai CEO Sam Altman called it a “major upgrade” and “an important step along the AGI path” during a conference call with journalists on Wednesday. He said it was “disastrous” to return to GPT-4 after using the GPT-5.
Openai said the model will be available free of charge for everyone, and users will no longer have to switch between previous models for various tasks. GPT-5 says it will automatically switch depending on the type of request and its complexity. The GPT-5 is available in Standard, Mini, and Nano versions. The usage restrictions for paid users will be higher.
Altman said the GPT-5 is also the company's fastest model.
“One of the things I was pushing the team was, 'Hey, we need to make it faster,'” Altman said. “And now I have this experience like, 'Do you think enough?' ”
The team said the GPT-5 will improve the capabilities of Vibe Coding, the latest trend in Silicon Valley.

Openai has teased this next ChatGpt iteration for over a year, but has increased chatter in the last few days and weeks. On Sunday, Altman shared a screenshot of the GPT-5 on X and asked models to recommend “most thought-provoking” television shows on AI.
In July, Altman said, “The GPT-5 is smarter than us in almost every respect.” Talking to the Podcaster Theo von, Altman asked the GPT-5 “I didn't really understand” questions, “I made them feel “no use” to the AI and answered them perfectly.
Openai also compared the development of the GPT-5 to the Manhattan project. This was the US government's efforts to build an atomic bomb during World War II, and he said he was nervous.
“There are moments in the history of science where a group of scientists see their creation and say, 'What did we do?',” Altman said.
Openai's last notable model launch was GPT-4.5 in February, which Altman described at the time as “the first model that feels like talking to thoughtful people.”
The release of the GPT-5 faces several delays, with the timeline shifting from mid-2024 to mid-2025 to August.
Meanwhile, the number of ChATGPT users continues to grow. In April, Altman said ChatGpt had 500 million weeks of active users. Openai said Thursday that ChatGpt is currently on track to hit 700 million active users “this week.”
