Openai and the UK government have signed a strategic partnership that includes AI infrastructure, employment and applications.
The voluntary, non-legally binding memorandum “sought to maintain the UK's world-leading AI ecosystem rooted in democratic values,” the UK's Department of Science, Innovation and Technology said in a press release on Monday (July 21).
The partnership will include examining the efficiency and effectiveness of taxpayer-funded services, the development of AI technology in the UK, and the deployment of AI to improve the support of the country's AI growth zone, according to the release.
The deal marks a deeper commitment to Openai's UK, including a company that selected the country at its first international office two years ago, the release said. Additionally, the company's ChatGpt Large Languages Model is bolstering an AI assistant called Humphrey, used by British civil servants.
With each release, it comes when the UK is investing up to £500 million (approximately $675 million) in sovereign AI.
“This partnership will see more [OpenAI’s] It will be in the UK to create well-paid technology jobs, drive investment in infrastructure, and provide definitively to our national agents on how this world-changing technology can advance,” Technology Secretary Peter Kyle said in the release.
Openai CEO Sam Altman said in this release: “The UK has a strong legacy of scientific leadership, and its government was one of the first to recognize the possibilities of AI through its AI plan of opportunity action.”
AI's Opportunity Action Plan pledges to strengthen AI adoption across the UK through world-class research, startup scale-up support, AI governance leadership and other actions, Pymnts reported in February.
In November, the UK government announced that it would provide a platform to help businesses assess and mitigate risks related to AI as technology use becomes more widespread.
The UK is clearly adopting a “coupled” approach to the PYMNTS-reported AI regulation issues reported in February 2024. The AI government's regulatory framework focuses on the goal of transforming the UK into an “AI-enabled” country and even a science and technology superpower by the end of the decade.
