NEW DELHI: Nvidia's managing director (MD) for Asia South Vishal Dhupart has affirmed the company's interest in India's AI mission and said that if the opportunity arises, Nvidia, like other companies, would be interested in it.
While interacting with ANI, Nvidia's MD for Asia South said, “If the opportunity is there and you want to work there, please apply.”
Asked about the number of deals the company is working on, Depart said it is in talks with “several” companies in the country for GPUs.
Dhupal was in Delhi on Friday and signed MOUs with private research institutes that are receiving technical support from the Nvidia AI University programme.
A dedicated Indian AI mission is under consideration. Speaking at the inaugural event of the Global India AI Summit 2024 in the Indian capital, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said the government will roll out the India AI Mission in the next two to three months, during which it will help domestic companies procure computing power units to run their artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
Announcing the India AI Mission, the Union Minister said, “More than 10,000 Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) will be procured under public-private partnership to enable industry efficiencies to be leveraged for a larger purpose.”
In March this year, the government approved the Rs 10,372 crore India AI Mission to deploy 10,000 GPUs through public-private partnerships, which is expected to spur investments in the AI sector and help set up data centers in India.
GPUs are specialized processors that accelerate graphics and image rendering through fast mathematical calculations that are essential for AI processing.
Speaking at the event, Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary, MeitY, said, “Around Rs 5,000 crore has been allocated for providing over 10,000 GPUs which are required to support the creation of computing capacity under this mission.”
He added that the central government is in the process of issuing tenders to procure computing power from various companies, and suggested that the government will subsidize access to the chips.
Speaking about the company's efforts to expand its Indian market through collaborations with Indian businesses and educational institutions, Dhupart told ANI, “NVIDIA's aim is to tackle complex problems. By addressing these challenges, we aim not only to find solutions but also to create impactful innovations that can unlock new markets.”
Nvidia has a reputation for producing the world's best GPUs, ideal for supporting new technologies in the AI field.
Demand for the company's chips has helped give it a market capitalization of $3.16 trillion, making it the third most valuable company after Microsoft and Apple.
A number of Indian companies, including the Reliance Group, the Tata Group and Yotta Infrastructure, have signed GPU deals with NVIDIA.
