Why not use AI to literally do everything? According to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, you might want to get your brain checked.
At least that’s what Huang reportedly feels about Luddite employees who still write code the old-fashioned way.
luck Hwang reportedly lashed out at an all-hands meeting last week, shortly after the company reported “disastrous” third-quarter results. his Managers are still telling their teams to refrain from using AI, which for him calls into question his psychological health.
“My understanding is that Nvidia has executives who are directing their employees to reduce their use of AI,” Huang said. “Are you sane?”
“I want artificial intelligence to automate every task that can be automated with artificial intelligence,” he demanded. “I promise, you’ll have work to do.”
This is a strong choice for Huang, given that there is still no consensus on whether AI tools actually improve worker productivity, especially in coding tasks. In fact, a growing body of evidence points to the opposite. One study found that programmers who used a coding assistant like Anthropic’s Claude used less than half of the AI’s suggestions and were 19% slower than their colleagues who didn’t take advantage of AI’s impressive automation capabilities.
Nevertheless, high-tech companies are hastening the process of profiting from their supplies. Google CEO Sundar Pichai has claimed that 25 percent of the company’s code is now generated by AI, and in June the company reportedly told employees that they would be expected to use the Gemini model to write code from now on.
The same story is happening at Microsoft. CEO Satya Nadella similarly claims that more than a quarter of the company’s code is written with AI. luck He said he echoed Google’s marching orders this summer by telling programmers that using AI “is no longer an option.”
Regardless of the quality of automation, another big question is what AI means for programmers’ jobs. This year’s technology sector cuts are expected to be severe, with about 140,000 employees expected to be laid off by the end of the year. Amazon is in the midst of laying off thousands of engineers, with one of its executives gloating about how “transformative” AI is and the need for innovation following devastating layoffs.
But Huang tells his employees with a straight face that adopting AI is good for them. Meanwhile, leaders of the companies that supply Nvidia chips are all warning that AI will actually eliminate jobs, even if Nvidia isn’t backing it up with billions of dollars of its own money. So never mind the widespread reports that AI chatbots are literally causing people to be institutionalized. –You are out of line to refuse to fall in love with someone.
