In a major boost to higher technical education in Tripura, the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Agartala, has announced the introduction of two new B.Tech programs in Computer Science and Engineering with specialization in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning from the academic year 2026-27.

The new course has a capacity of 60 students and is designed to prepare students for new opportunities in advanced computing and data-driven technologies, according to an official release. Admission is done through Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counseling process and NIELIT’s own entrance test.

The institute functions under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, and already offers various programs such as Diploma in Computer Science and Technology, Diploma in Electronics and Communication Engineering, BCA, and Master’s in Data Engineering. With the addition of specializations in AI and ML, NIELIT aims to position itself as the leading technology education hub in the Northeast.

Officials stressed that SC/ST students enrolled in NIELIT will be exempted from paying tuition fees, making higher education accessible to marginalized communities.

The announcement comes at a time when demand for professionals skilled in artificial intelligence and machine learning is increasing across the industry. By introducing these courses, NIELIT Agartala aims to align its academic offerings with national priorities in digital innovation and technology-driven growth.

Education experts believe that the move will not only benefit students in Tripura but also attract talent from across the Northeast and strengthen the region’s role in India’s expanding digital economy.
