In an interview conducted on the company’s one-year anniversary as an independent company from NHN Corp., Kim said NHN as a cloud provider amid the massive tech race for generative AI technology sparked by Open AI’s ChatGPT. We shared our thoughts on the roadmap for AI business in the Cloud.
NHN Cloud, which was spun off from NHN in April last year and became an independent cloud company, has achieved remarkable growth over the past year, successfully attracting external investment for the first time, and becoming a unicorn company with a corporate value of 1. trillion won ($747 million).

NHN Cloud recorded sales of 160 billion won last year and is aiming for 210 billion won this year.

NHN Cloud is performing well in markets where foreign cloud brands find it difficult to enter, such as public institutions and financial institutions. Last year, it ranked first in the public sector cloud transformation business with a 39% share. In addition, in the private cloud market dominated by foreign companies, NHN Cloud stands out by acquiring many new customers in the financial sector, such as KB Financial Group and Shinhan Investment Corporation.
Kim Jong-Il emphasized, “We are making concrete achievements in the financial and securities fields, such as signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Shinhan Investment.”
NHN Cloud is focusing on strengthening its AI business as a future growth driver. Since around 2016, the company has expanded its service-oriented AI, or AI as a Service (AIaaS) offering.
NHN Cloud is conducting research and development of a private ChatGPT service for B2B as a new business. NHN Cloud believes it is competitive in cloud solutions for finance, gaming, e-commerce, education, and the public sector. Companies in these areas are targets for customized platform as a service (PaaS) businesses.
“Unlike other providers based on proprietary sources, NHN Cloud employs OpenStack, an open standard cloud computing platform, and has strengths in multi-cloud support. We will continue to strengthen our enterprise-specific AI solutions with a focus on compatibility,” said Kim.
