Netflix first used the generator AI in one of its shows to create “cheaper” or “better” movies and TV series.
After Netflix announced its second quarter results on Thursday (July 17), co-Chief Executive Ted Sarandos confirmed with analysts by the Argentinian SF Show. Forever It was the first show to use AI on the platform.
“I believe AI is an incredible opportunity to help creators make films and series better, not cheaper,” said the 60-year-old.
According to Sarandos, the Spanish series used AI to portray the collapsed buildings of Buenos Aires following survivors of the deadly snowfall that ruined the population. He added: “That sequence is actually the first AI final footage that will be displayed on screen in the Netflix original series or film. That's why the creators were excited by the outcome.”
Praise on the work of the Visual Effects team, he added: “We were able to achieve amazing results with amazing speeds using tools with AI. In fact, our VFX sequences were completed 10 times faster than traditional VFX tools and workflows.”
Sarandos also defended the fact that AI allowed shows with a small budget to have a compelling effect that would otherwise have been “not feasible” on projects of that size.
The executives also moved to dispel fears about AI being replaced by everyone's role in the film and television industry. Those using the tool claim they have seen “the benefits of production through pre-vision and shot planning work, and certainly visual effects.”
The use of AI in films has been a hot topic these days, with individuals like Robert Downey Jr. and James Gunn embracing it by individuals like James Cameron and Ben Affleck.
AI was in focus during the 2023 conflict between SAG-AFTRA, the largest union of actors and screen performers in the United States, and Hollywood Studios.
