Research by NEC and VTTI has created the potential to identify and warn drivers of dangerous traffic situations and hazards, such as approaching pedestrians and animals. These tests were conducted January through March 2023 at Virginia Smart Road in Blacksburg, Virginia. Virginia Smart Road is one of the only facilities in the world capable of conducting these advanced tests.
“This solution combines private 5G with cutting-edge AI-based video analytics and C-V2X technology to create social value that contributes to the safety and security of vehicles and pedestrians near intersections,” said Mack. Masahiko Nakagawa said. Director of Corporate Business Development Division, NEC. “These technologies can identify dangerous situations in areas that could be blind spots for drivers and pedestrians and warn them about such situations. Not only can we reduce it, but we can also support autonomous driving from the roadside infrastructure,” he added.
The use of 5G is expanding in a wide range of fields, and it is expected that the demand for 5G networks will continue to grow globally. In response to this, NEC has conducted such demonstration experiments with VTTI researchers to identify best practices for effectively utilizing 5G for traffic safety under conditions such as international frequency bands and technical specifications. is developing.
In these trials, cameras and private 5G base stations installed on signal poles at VTTI’s private test facility transmit high-definition traffic images over private 5G, enabling real-time analysis of the images using AI. rice field.
“NEC’s infrastructure-linked mobility concept requires highly reliable, low-latency communication via a dedicated network for predicting and detecting accidents near intersections,” said Mike, Director of Technology Implementation at VTTI. Morenhauer said. “VTTI believes this proof of concept will complement C-V2X technology and improve traffic safety by informing vehicles and pedestrians of potential traffic hazards when passing through intersections. We intend to apply the results of these tests to real public transport intersections by way of a road. “

We were commissioned by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications to formulate specifications and conduct tests for the “Demonstration Test of Video Analysis Applications Using 5G and Traffic Lights in the United States.”
These tests do not use technology to identify or authenticate individuals. Testing included software-based privacy filtering based on Virginia Department of Transportation requirements.
NEC will use this experiment to advance further technological development and contribute to the reduction of traffic accidents and traffic congestion around the world.
