Title: Machine learning for exoplanet inspection and verification
Abstract: There is growing interest in applying machine learning to scrutinize traffic signals from Kepler and TESS. However, adoption of these tools has faced inertia and resistance, due in part to limited understanding of machine learning fundamentals. Many in the astronomy, especially the exoplanet community, still favor traditional statistical methods such as Bayesian classifiers. This talk will briefly explore the history of machine classification, its Bayesian roots, and why deep learning has revolutionized automated analysis.
We then introduce ExoMiner, a deep learning model developed in 2022 to classify transit signals and verify new exoplanets, and its advanced successor, ExoMiner++, designed to scrutinize TESS signals. We also present performance results for these models on both Kepler and TESS data.
