We received this complaint on our Whatsapp tipline (9999499044) seeking fact-checking.
News checkers noticed that Narayana Murthy's lip movements in the viral clip were completely out of sync with the audio and looked unnatural, raising questions whether it was digitally manipulated. We also performed a keyword search for 'India Today Narayana Murthy Interview Trading Platform' but found no reliable coverage of such an interview.
But we said Murthy flagged a viral deepfake video endorsing and investing in automated trading applications, seen here, here, and here, multiple times on December 23, 2023. I came across a news report. Murthy reportedly denied his involvement in supporting such platforms and called on people not to believe in deepfake videos, telling us: Marcy's tweet, Dated December 14, 2023.
I then performed a reverse image search for keyframes from viral ads, which led me to this YouTube video uploaded by CNBC-TV18 on December 14, 2022. This viral excerpt can be seen from the 01:15 mark to the 02:00 mark, where Marcy can clearly be heard talking about how to start a company. At no point in the interview did he endorse the trading platform. This proves that the viral video was edited.
We also ran this audio through Resemble AI's deepfake detector and found it to be “fake,” further confirming that this viral video is a deepfake.
