More than 60 PC Higher Education Institutions Allow Students to Use AI Tools – Weekly

New Delhi, October 7 (PTI) Over 50% of India's Higher Education Institutions (HEI) are developing learning materials using generated AI, while 60% are allowing students to use AI tools, according to a new report based on a survey of 30 major HEIs.
The report released by Ernst and Young-Parthenon has collaborated with FICCI to discover “Future-Ready Campuses: Unlocking of AI of Ai of Cower in Higheruduction.” This is because over 56% of HEIs in India already have AI-related policies in place, with 40% deploying tutor systems and chatbots using AI.
The report is based on a survey of 30 major HEIs across India and examines AI adoption across core academics and operational functions examining usage patterns, governance preparation, curriculum innovation, and faculty development. It introduces diagnostic maturation models and a practical roadmap to accelerate the adoption of an entire system of artificial intelligence.
“Half of HEIs (53%) use generated AI to develop learning materials, while 40% deploy individualized tutoring systems and chatbots with AI. Another 39% have implemented adaptive learning platforms, while 38% have used AI for automated grading.
“These findings highlight how AI is already affecting curriculum design, evaluation models, and classroom engagement strategies,” the report states.
Throughout the teaching and learning situation, AI is deployed for a wide range of applications, including adaptive tutoring, automated grading, plagiarism detection, curriculum design, and career guidance.
According to the research report, educational materials, AI-powered tutoring or chatbots, and generative AI tools for creating personalized adaptive learning systems have emerged as the biggest use cases.
The report also highlighted the importance of embedding basic AI literacy throughout the program to develop baseline capabilities that include all students' knowledge of core AI concepts, ethical awareness, digital skills, critical thinking and practical applications regardless of discipline.
In the STEM field, this integrates advanced AI content such as machine learning, natural language processing, and robotics into the core curriculum, providing graduates with specialized technical expertise.
“To maximize the possibilities of AI, India must move to scale beyond experiments. It integrates AI tools across education and campus operations, embedding AI literacy across subjects, investing in robust digital infrastructure, and strengthens faculty capabilities and governance frameworks.

The report highlights that increased student interaction with AI must be supported by clear classroom policies, thoughtful curriculum design, and updated institutional governance frameworks. The report also flagged the uneven progress of key enablers, including technology capabilities and undergraduate preparation for AI integration.
