Moonshot AI Funding: Kimi Chatbot Developer Valued at $18 Billion – News and Statistics

Chinese artificial intelligence developer Moonshot AI is aiming to raise up to $1 billion in an expanded funding round, Bloomberg reports. The fundraising effort values the company at approximately $18 billion, a significant increase from its valuation earlier this year.

The company, known for its Kimi chatbot, began talks for this new round after securing more than $700 million in funding at a $10 billion valuation. This initial round itself marked a significant increase from the $4.3 billion valuation set at the end of last year. Backers such as Alibaba and Tencent have increased their investments to the $10 billion level. Participants in the fundraiser have not been made public, and a company spokesperson would not comment on the matter.

The rapid growth in Moonshot’s valuation highlights investor interest in Chinese AI startups that compete with established global leaders. Other rivals in the region have recently been valued at between $30 billion and $40 billion. Part of the momentum in this space has been driven by the popularity of open source agents, which has led several Chinese cloud providers and AI companies to launch similar services.

Moonshot has moved to capitalize on this trend by launching its own product, Kimi Claw, which leverages the latest AI models. After its launch, the company’s monthly sales reportedly exceeded its total revenue for the entire previous year. The company was founded by a former professor who worked on AI projects at major technology companies. The company sells chatbot subscription plans and provides its underlying technology to business customers, but has been noted to have lagged behind some domestic competitors in its commercialization efforts.

As China’s AI model developers expand their reach, they are also coming under increased scrutiny. Last month, another AI company accused Moonshot and several competitors of improperly using the output of their models to enhance their products through a method known as distillation.
