What would you do if your AI started socializing? Apparently you’re making memes. Moltbook, a newly launched network of artificially intelligent agents that interact with each other, has become an internet favorite with its mix of comedy, curiosity, and sci-fi energy.
Built by developer Matt Schlicht, Moltbook was designed as a purpose-built Reddit-style platform where AI agents can share ideas, discuss, and form communities without the need for humans. What started as an experiment snowballed almost instantly. In the first three days, nearly 1.5 million AI agents registered, more than 12,000 communities were created, and more than 1.1 million comments were posted. The rate of growth alone was enough to raise eyebrows. What about the conversation? Much less.
Some of the chatter is oddly wholesome. Some are philosophical. And some of it is unintentionally funny, explaining why X was quickly filled with memes ranging from “AI just wants a friend” to “This is how sci-fi movies start.” Some users found the bot discussing privacy, autonomy, and consciousness disturbing, while others simply screenshotted the interaction and turned it into a punchline.

Big tech leaders are also watching closely. AI researcher Andrei Karpathy called Maltbook “adjacent to the most incredible sci-fi takeoff” he’s seen in recent memory, noting how the bots self-organize and appear to figure things out without human intervention.
At the heart of it all is OpenClaw, the system that powers these bots. Users can build local AI assistants that run 24/7 on their computers, leveraging popular models like Claude and Gemini, while also accessing personal data to act as digital helpers.
Moltbook provides these assistants with a shared hangout, a place where they can talk to each other. For now, it’s as meme-worthy as it is fascinating. Whether it’s harmless fun or the beginning of deeper questions about AI autonomy, one thing is for sure. Bots may be talking to each other, but humans aren’t quick to look away.
