what happened?

Microsoft (MSFT) stock has had a rough start to 2026, dropping 21% in the first quarter.

What’s the big reason? Investors are skeptical about whether the company’s AI products are actually gaining traction with companies.

That story may be starting to change.

  • Judson Althoff, who runs Microsoft’s commercial business, told employees at a town hall meeting this week that CoPilot adoption among business customers is surging.
  • He said the goals he and Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood set for the March quarter were met.
  • He also said he was “very confident” in the ambitious targets set for the June quarter.

Comments are important.

  • Analysts have been saying for months that adoption of Microsoft 365 Copilot has been slow.
  • The product costs $30 per month on top of your existing Microsoft 365 subscription, and as of January, Microsoft had 15 million paid seats, about 3% of the standard commercial bundle.
  • Following the disclosure, UBS analysts said they had expected more.

Microsoft took that feedback and overhauled its go-to-market strategy. The new approach appears to be working, at least based on Althoff’s comments.

For context, CEO Satya Nadella said on the second-quarter earnings call that there are “many more” enterprise users in the free Copilot Chat tier.

The goal is to convert these users to paid seats, and that conversion appears to be accelerating now.

What the market is saying about Microsoft stock

Microsoft stock has suffered a widespread selloff this year, hurting software companies.

The concern is that while generative AI is increasing competition and eating away at profit margins, the rewards from massive data center spending have yet to be fully realized.

Microsoft spent $37.5 billion in capital spending in the second quarter alone, most of which went to AI infrastructure.

Investors hope that will lead to increased profits. Copilot is one of the clearest ways to do that.

MSFT Stock Valuation Model (TIKR)

If Althoff’s comments hold true when Microsoft releases its third-quarter results, it could be a meaningful catalyst for Microsoft stock.

If we see a significant increase in the number of paid co-pilot seats from 15 million, we will know that our spending on AI is paying off.

The June quarter target will be the next real test. Keep an eye on Microsoft stock as its earnings date approaches.
