Generative AI has been just image generation, text generation, and even video generation for a while, but as the technology matures, its applications are increasing. OpenAI's announcement of his GPT-4o certainly came as a huge shock to competitors. Competitors are now announcing their own innovations. Microsoft has made several AI announcements, including new features in Microsoft Edge that will certainly come in handy.
Microsoft announced several new updates for its apps in Build 2024. These include a new feature in Microsoft Edge that brings real-time video translation capabilities to the browser. Powered by generative AI technology, Edge allows you to seamlessly translate web videos into different languages. You've probably seen a video or two that you wanted to watch but didn't have dubbing or subtitles. This feature helps you translate while you listen in real-time, just like a translator would do on live TV.
This advancement follows Microsoft's recent announcement of Copilot+ PC, which supports system-level live captions to translate speech across any app or video platform. While Edge's real-time video translation works uniquely, it's a very similar feature with a very similar purpose. It also works on other platforms outside of Windows. The feature will initially be available on YouTube and other platforms, including LinkedIn, Reuters, and CNBC News, and will support translation between Spanish and English, and from English to other languages, including German, Hindi, Italian, Russian, and Spanish. Microsoft plans to expand language support in the future.
In addition to translation features, Microsoft Edge for Business, which is designed for enterprise users with Microsoft Entra ID accounts, also has improved security. IT administrators can now implement screenshot prevention policies on sensitive pages and monitor device update status using edge management services. This increases the protection of sensitive information and reduces risks associated with outdated software.
If you want to check this out, it's not clear when exactly this feature will roll out to users. We'll have to keep an eye on this as we may see this happen when Windows 11 24H2 is released later this year.
