Meta launches lawsuit against “nudify” AI company via Facebook, Instagram ads

On Thursday, Meta Platform (META) announced a lawsuit against the Hong Kong-based company that was able to circumvent the social media giant's ad detection technology to promote explicit apps with AI.

Parents on Facebook and Instagram said they are suing Joy Timeline HK Limited. It owns a slate for an app called Crushai. The lawsuit was filed in Hong Kong, where Joy Timeline is based, Mehta said.

The company behind the so-called “Nudify” app continued to circumvent the Meta ad review process after previous ads for the service were removed from Meta's platform, Meta said.

Meta also said it has revamped its detection technology to increase the number of ads that promote services that don't have explicit content like nude, but violate the rules of meta.

The move comes after Meta received a letter from Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin earlier this year. The letter cited a report from the Tech News outlet 404 Mediafound that an estimated 90% of traffic to Crushai's app comes from ads placed on Meta's platform.

The Joy Timeline did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The lawsuit claims that the second AI company against AI companies, a day after Disney (DIS) and Universal collaborated with SUE AI Image Generation Company Midjourney, earning millions of people by violating copyrights on property such as Star Wars and Marvel Comics.
