MetaAndrew “Boz” Bosworth predicts that artificial intelligence will create a fierce disparity in the software engineering profession. Those who acquire AI tools will acquire premium positions, while others will fall into the lower rank role, focusing on data collection and labeling.During an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Instagram, Bosworth said that AI will lead to “strong tiering of capabilities” between developers who accept technology and those who do not adapt quickly enough.“To the point that they can't replace the tool with the tool themselves, engineers who master it can command the premium,” Bosworth explained. “And those who don't master the tools will end up working under the tool layer in data collection, labeling tasks. For some reason, the machine is not good and not highly leveraged.”
AI tools mirror transformative impacts on internet coding
Bosworth compared the potential benefits of AI to how the Internet revolutionized software development, allowing developers to make Google compiler errors and access better API documentation through the online community.Soon, he believes that AI will “make our lives easier, just as the internet has made our lives easier.” Looking further, he envisions AI to provide engineers with unprecedented “leverage” and drives critical “complexity and productivity.”
Bosworth says the future of software companies will be small teams, large scale
META Executives predict that AI will enable dramatically lean organizations and predict “companies with several employees and billions of users.” This is in line with CEO Mark Zuckerberg's vision of creating “mid-level engineers” that allow AI to write code, allowing founders to build on “very small and talented teams.”Zuckerberg has defended a “efficient” push at Meta since 2022, bringing tens of thousands of layoffs. The company recently announced plans to enable job seekers to use AI in coding interviews, demonstrating its commitment to integrating artificial intelligence throughout the engineering process.Despite acknowledging uncertainty about the exact outcome, Bosworth emphasized that AI will help the software industry grow rather than shrink it.
