WhatsApp now displays a summary of unread messages created using AI. This feature uses meta AI to generate short summary of chats, allowing users to quickly catch up with unread messages in personal or group chats without scrolling through the pile of text. This feature is currently deployed to WhatsApp users in the US, supporting English.
WhatsApp will gradually expand its deployment to more regions and other languages later this year. The private messaging overview is also part of Meta's broader plan for integrating artificial intelligence through meta AI, deeper into the WhatsApp experience. Once available in the app, users can ask Meta AI to summarise their content rather than opening each chat and reading a long backlog of messages.
When prompted, Meta AI will put together the user's messages in bullet points and provide a quick overview of what's going on in the conversation. This feature is available for both one-to-one and group chats, and is especially useful for high traffic conversations where messages accumulate quickly.
How WhatsApp Summary Works
The message summary function is driven by private processing. According to Meta, this method is designed so that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can see the actual content or generated summary of the message. Instead, AI processes the data without sending it to an external server or exposing it to a corporate system.
According to META, the summary is generated in an environment that provides privacy. Even Meta's AI models do not retain or learn from the summaries and messages they process. This leaves the data invisible to everyone else in the chat, as it cannot access Meta or WhatsApp, and users requesting a summary can see it.
To respect user preferences, WhatsApp does not enable features by default. Released as an optional feature that must be manually turned on. Users can also adjust their settings with advanced chat privacy controls and specify which chats can be included in such AI-powered features.
Additionally, message summary does not notify other chat participants when users ask Meta AI to summarize the message. Whether it's a group or a personal chat, Meta promises that whatsapp summary will remain a private action and will not send visible metrics or alerts to others involved in the conversation.
