Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a new op-ed published Tuesday that the rise of artificial intelligence should be used to empower all people, rather than being centralized and controlled by a few institutions.
Zuckerberg wrote in the Wall Street Journal that in the coming years, people will be able to harness superintelligence beyond human capabilities to create and discover new things, drive economic growth and create opportunities. He noted that this contrasts with the rhetoric of some AI developers, who argued that widespread access to AI and its power would lead to better outcomes.
“It’s amazing how doom-filled the discourse of so many people developing artificial intelligence is. I don’t understand why people who believe that AI will eliminate most jobs and human interaction would rush to build that future,” he wrote.
“AI is so dangerous that the idea that the only safe path is extreme concentration of power seems dangerous. Historically, expecting that absolute power will be benevolent to humanity once we become sufficiently enlightened has not led to safe or positive outcomes,” Zuckerberg explained.

Zuckerberg said there have been many transformative advances in technology throughout history that have fueled fears that they will leave people behind, and that as those technologies advance, people ultimately enjoy more prosperity, health, and freedom.
“Putting power in the hands of people to pursue their own desires is how humanity has made the most progress. Fresh ideas and great advances rarely emerge from established institutions alone,” he wrote.
Mr. Zuckerberg alluded to how large-scale technological developments for humanity, such as aviation, electricity, and personal computing, were driven by individuals without deep ties to organizations. “Equipping everyone with more powerful tools will make each person’s ability to shape their future more powerful, not less,” he said.

Meta CEO acknowledged that there is a balance between using AI for automation and that AI is a tool that fosters innovation, expands people’s skills, and enables businesses to launch, adding that when the balance tips towards automation, it can have a negative impact on jobs and the economy.
“But if superintelligence becomes widespread, I think there will be more jobs in the future, not fewer. It will be much easier to start a business without raising a lot of capital.”
“We expect the economy to become more entrepreneurial, with more people working for small businesses rather than large corporations,” he wrote.

Zuckerberg added that the development of superintelligence “will be the biggest technological advance we’ll see in our lifetimes.”
“Meta is committed to building on the principles of personal empowerment, invention, and the balance of power. The arc of human history has bent toward putting more power in the hands of the people.”
“I am optimistic that with these values leading the way, we can build a positive future for all,” he wrote.
