Sam Tyner Monroe expands firm’s services across artificial intelligence (AI) testing, program design, data strategy and consulting
Manatt, Phelps & Phillips LLP, a full-service multidisciplinary professional services firm, announces the appointment of Dr. Sam Tyner Monroe to its Board of Directors. To further build out our cross-industry artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.
With a deep background in data science, responsible AI, data visualization, advanced statistical modeling, and machine learning, Tyner Monroe strengthens the firm’s work in guiding clients through complex business, legal, and ethical challenges created by the rapid adoption of relevant technologies. The company will also expand its services in AI testing and evaluation for businesses of all sizes that need to address the potential for inaccuracy, bias, misuse, and other emerging risks that come with AI implementation.

At Manatt, Tyner Monroe brings a unique background as a data scientist and applied statistician in legal and business contexts. As a member of the firm’s Privacy and Data Security practice, she will partner with the firm’s broader AI and cross-industry teams to help clients evaluate AI output for performance, accuracy, bias, and abuse. Identify high-risk tools and systems that require increased human oversight. Conduct adversarial testing to assess vulnerabilities. We also help our clients’ product development and IT teams develop AI validation and compliance strategies, ensuring compliance with consumer protection laws, data privacy frameworks, and industry best practices through rigorous impact assessments, transparency measures, and qualitative and quantitative testing. We also work to ethically design, develop, and implement AI and automated decision-making systems, ensuring they are transparent, accountable, and aligned with legal and regulatory standards.

Prior to joining Manatt, Tyner Monroe was a Managing Director at one of the world’s largest law firms, advising clients on responsible AI implementation. She previously served as a data scientist at a legal technology company and an AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the Bureau of Labor Statistics. He also held research and teaching positions at Iowa State University, contributing to data-driven public policy through the Data Science for the Public Good program.
