The future of work still requires thinkers

The workplace is entering a strange new phase.

For years, excelling at your job meant knowing your field, gaining experience, and learning the tools of the job. Now we have added one more layer. Workers are expected to understand not only their jobs, but also how artificial intelligence can support, speed up, and reshape those jobs.

The change may feel threatening.

But the more useful question is not: “Will AI take my job?” A better question to ask is, “What part of my job will become more valuable with the presence of AI?”

That’s the thread running through Gareth Edwards and Daniela Thom’s conversation about Making Sense.

Tom argues that AI is more than just an office tool. Your performance baseline changes. In technical fields, qualifications alone may not be enough. Employers may increasingly want to know how they can use AI to maximize outcomes, improve workflows, and resolve issues faster.

Workers who simply copy the AI’s answers may be easier to replace. Employees who can question, refine, test, and improve the answers are more valuable.

This is an important distinction for South Africans looking to get a job, change jobs or stay competitive in a changing economy.

AI fluency is more than just knowing which tools to use. It’s about knowing how to think with tools. That means writing better prompts, refining instructions, understanding limitations, checking facts, and applying judgment. It also means knowing when not to use AI at all.

The same applies to business.

Businesses that implement AI without a strategy can end up with confusion, errors, or dependencies. Businesses that ignore AI completely may fall behind competitors who leverage AI to save time, improve service, analyze information, and support decision-making.

The middle path is the wise one.

Adopt tools. Learn the tools. Ask the tool a question.

The most useful insight in this episode is that AI does not eliminate the need for human intelligence. Revealing where human intelligence is still needed most.

Future workers may not know everything.

They may be the ones who know what to ask, what to suspect, and what to do next.
