Lawmakers advise Nigerian students to use AI responsibly

Applications of AI

Congressman Kolawole Akinlayo has warned Nigerian students against over-reliance on artificial intelligence and digital learning tools, warning that misuse could undermine academic excellence.

Mr. Akinlayo, who represents Ekiti North 2nd Federal Constituency, gave this advice on Friday in Abuja while receiving the 2026 Nigeria Student Association Outstanding Leadership, Service and Community Impact Award.

Speaking at the event, the lawmaker said that over-reliance on AI risks weakening students’ critical thinking skills and overall academic performance.

“AI should be used in a positive way, not in a negative way. We should be able to think for ourselves rather than having the computer think for us.

“Earlier, you had to attend lectures, get notes, take notes, keep them and read books. Still, people turned out to be good and good students, but these days, when given an assignment or a test, people search the Internet for answers.

“Modern tools should make people better, but that’s not the case, because people are using computers in the wrong way. Computers are designed to help you accomplish more with less effort, and people are using them in the wrong way,” he said.

He also expressed concern that digital tools are being used unethically among students, leading to poor moral education.

“Currently, some students use computers to commit fraud at school. This reflects a lack of proper home education. Many parents allow their children to use computers.”

“We must restore effective parental discipline and ensure rewards and consequences for behavior. Then we will see better results,” he added.

Mr. Akinlayo urged teachers and parents to pay close attention to the moral development of students, stressing the importance of discipline and ethical behavior alongside academics.

Reflecting on the award, he said it was an honor and reaffirmed his determination to support students. He said he had introduced a scholarship for students in his constituency, offering an additional N100,000 stipend to students who achieved a CGPA of 3.5 or above.

“We are honored to receive this recognition at a time when efforts to make Nigeria great again continue,” he said, pledging continued support for student welfare and NASS activities.

Earlier, NAS Chairman Olusola Oladoja said the award was based on an independent evaluation of the lawmaker’s achievements since taking office.

“We present this award in recognition of your exemplary leadership, selfless service to our nation, and outstanding contributions to community development and social impact.

“Your dedication to advancing the common good, empowering people and driving meaningful change continues to inspire hope and promote sustainable development across Nigeria,” he said.

Mr. Oladoja added that the award is aimed at encouraging Mr. Akinlayo to strive harder in the service of his constituents, students and the nation at large.
