The government ordered the implementation of a “mobile-based artificial intelligence (AI)-led facial recognition attendance system” at all schools and support agencies on Saturday.
“This is expected to provide accurate daily attendance records for school children, identify absentees and ensure transparency in implementing student-focused programs,” the order said.
The government has developed another mobile application for this system and has included all the information about students in their student achievement tracking system.
This attendance system will be implemented from grades 2025 to 2026. Software applications and data for this project will be held immediately at the Karnataka State Date Center in Vikasa Soudha upon order.

A total of 52,686 schools, including 46,460 governments and 6,226 support, will be covered by the program, allowing attendance of a total of 52,55,738 students to be monitored.
The number of public school students is estimated to be 40,74,525, while support school students are estimated to be 11,81,213.
The system identifies student face data in real time and uses an advanced vector-based facial recognition engine. The captured images of students are encrypted to a unique ID via a mobile application, and the images cannot be reverse engineered to reconstruct the captured images for maximum privacy and security.
The facial recognition attendance system also helps to monitor the number of students who will benefit from government schemes such as egg distribution, noon meals, shoes, socks, and more.
To assess its effectiveness, the Ministry of School Education and Literacy conducted a pilot project in 2024 at schools in Uttarakannada district. After its success, the department decided to expand the system statewide.
Prime Minister Siddharamaiah announced that in the 16th state budget, children's attendance will be monitored under the “Nilantala” program based on facial recognition technology.

“People at all levels can get attendance in a short time and their accuracy is achieved. We can fix defects in our current attendance record system and get accurate attendance every day. We plan to improve the educational system of each school,” the order read.
