Fact check: A video clip in which Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath claims to have promised Muslims the construction of mosques and restoration of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir is a deepfake. The original video is older and is from a 2018 meeting in the state House offices.
BOOM has discovered that the audio in the clip claiming to be of Kamal Nath is an audio clone and not his own voice.
In the viral video, Nath is seen speaking to a group of mostly Muslim people. The overlaid voice says, “I've been thinking for a long time that I should talk to you. But I want you to understand that this doesn't mean you should leave the room. We care about you very much.” , and we care about you. That's why Congress wants that.” Our Muslim brothers support us and ensure that you get land for your mosque so that we can take future decisions that will benefit you. I think that I want to do it. We also look at Article 370. I can't discuss everything openly. …”
The video was posted on X with a caption in Hindi that read, “Members of Parliament, please do not let this video fall into the hands of the Bharatiya Janata Party.”

BOOM discovered that the video was old and the overlaid audio was deepfake audio.
We fact-checked the same video in November 2023, which went viral a week before the assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh.
It was later found that the original video was from November 14, 2018, when Kamal Nath met Muslim voters. In the original video, Nath is not talking about mosques or Article 370, but appeals to minority communities to vote for Congress, while warning against “Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) tactics”. I'm asking you to continue.
The same video had gone viral in 2018 as well, when the then Bharatiya Janata Party leaders posted it on social media platforms criticizing Kamal Nath for his comments about the RSS and Narendra Modi. A Times of India news report on the video dated November 14, 2018 states, “Kamal Nath's video directed at minority Muslims in state assembly office was heavily tweeted by BJP leaders. It went viral within minutes as people started retweeting it.”
The video and Nath's comments were widely reported in several media outlets starting in 2018, including Lokmat Hindi and Jagran.
In the original video, Nath asks, “What are RSS workers doing these days? I have information…. All they say is two lines. If you want to vote Hindu, Please vote for Tiger Modi,” he can be heard saying. If you want to vote for a Muslim, this is their strategy, they will try to incite you, but until election day, you have to do so. It's about enduring them. ”
Regarding this new claim, BOOM released a video through Itisaar, a deepfake analysis tool created by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur. The tool confirmed that the narration was an AI-generated voice.
