Julie Seal advocates for treating AI video like proper production work, putting proof, process, and even insurance behind the creative brilliance.
So, the fifth Ay? This is a column. So it’s time to talk about insurance…bear with me.
You’ve grafted, crafted, and refined your accomplishments to create a frankly awe-inspiring and seriously sloppy AI video ad.
Your team is excited. The client feels beside himself and happy. Everyone is wide-eyed and obsessed with it. Is it the future, Init?
Then, a few weeks later, you receive an email from your lawyer.
Apparently, the rights holder has some questions about the scene in your spot.
How was it created?

Grimaces and melting face emojis start happening to the team, but it’s true.
But lo and behold, the producer, my favorite producer, steps in to save the day. Armed with well-filed liability insurance paperwork, everyone can say, “Oh, this could turn into a big, expensive mess?” Don’t worry, they’ll just dig up the paper trail of your dreams.
They also tracked the platforms, models, prompts, and references used for each bit, human approval within the agency, conversations recorded with clients about the use of AI, a series of modifications, new prompts, new references, and the models used for those bits. Notes, client approvals, agency usage policies, insurance details. Hmm, hmm.
you’re covered. you are in a much better position. The rights holder was mistaken and your team can prove that you never referenced their copyrighted work.
But what really matters is insurance. I’m not instinctively interested in insurance. I usually have a quick life plan that says, “Ask for forgiveness, not permission.” After all, I’m a “chronic optimist” so I’ve always felt that insurance is like paying for something. probably That won’t happen.
Until you really think about the possibility of a long and stressful legal dispute over your AI campaign and realize you don’t need anything more to keep you up at night. My 5-year-old does plenty of work in that regard. Especially when you realize you can spend less than a month’s worth of pret salads and iced Americanos.
Yes, creating AI things isn’t just about instant adorableness. It also concerns paperwork, processes, and certifications. That’s exactly right. No one wants to take anything away from anyone.
If you don’t have insurance yet, DM our lovely broker Charles Mills. Don’t tell him I secretly have hate insurance.
