IonQ acquires Seed Innovation for AI-driven quantum infrastructure scaling

Machine Learning

IonQ (NYSE: IONQ) has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Seed Innovations, a Colorado software and technology research and development company specializing in machine learning (ML) and cloud architecture. The acquisition is expected to close on January 30, 2026, and aims to integrate Seed’s technical expertise into IonQ’s Quantum Infrastructure division to optimize system performance and automate the expansion of enterprise-ready quantum solutions. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Seed Innovations team joins IonQ under the leadership of Frank Backes, President of IonQ Quantum Infrastructure. Seed founder Marlu Oswald will report to Backes. This integration focuses on bringing Seed’s experience in full-lifecycle software development and advanced ML algorithms to develop the AI-driven software layer needed to manage complex quantum workloads. Seed previously established its technological pedigree through legacy systems upgrades and R&D for the Department of the Army (DoW) and intelligence community.

The acquisition’s technology objectives include three key performance pillars:

  • AI-optimized performance: Utilize deep ML to analyze system data and predict operational anomalies in quantum processors.
  • Enterprise-scale automation: Implement proven DevOps and autoscaling architectures to streamline quantum circuit deployment.
  • Cloud interoperability: Leverage Seed’s experience in microservices and cloud migration to power IonQ availability across all major hyperscale providers.

This acquisition is the latest in IonQ’s aggressive “full stack” expansion strategy. Seed Innovations joins a portfolio of recent acquisitions including Skyloom (networking), Vector Atomic (sensing), SkyWater Technology (semiconductor manufacturing) and Oxford Ionics (hardware). By verticalizing software research and development alongside manufacturing and network assets, IonQ intends to establish an end-to-end platform for quantum computing, security, and sensing applications.
