Ion Video Ltd (ASX:IOV) outlined earlier this week how its patented programmable video technology could position it at the heart of the next wave of AI-driven media transformation, with founder and head of innovation Finbarr O’Hanlon confirming discussions with global tech giants such as Meta and Alphabet.
In an interview with Proactiv, O’Hanlon discussed the structural changes occurring across digital media as consumers increasingly seek personalized content experiences rather than the traditional one-to-many broadcast model.
He noted that video now accounts for approximately 82% of all internet traffic, increasing pressure on platforms to improve the efficiency of content relevancy, discovery, and distribution.
O’Hanlon said Ion Video’s technology differs from emerging generative AI video systems in that it dynamically assembles existing video components rather than rendering entirely new files. He described his company’s system as “programmable video,” allowing it to generate highly personalized content in seconds.
O’Hanlon said the company’s intellectual property portfolio dates back to 2007 and is currently being strengthened by extending protection into 2038. He said the patents focus on a virtual video architecture that allows video to function like a programmable database.
The company believes this approach can significantly reduce storage, transcoding, and compute costs for large video platforms and data center operators.
Mr O’Hanlon also highlighted the potential commercial opportunities associated with video archives, which are underutilized. He said major media owners have significant libraries of content that remain difficult to monetize under existing infrastructure models.
Ion Video believes its technology enables the assembly and distribution of new forms of content using archived footage, creating new monetization channels for rights holders.
The company has been moving rapidly since restarting operations in November. O’Hanlon said Ion Video has already developed an enterprise-grade infrastructure hosted on AWS, strengthening its intellectual property position, ensuring independent verification of patents and freedom to operate.
He added that the company is also in advanced commercial negotiations with major global technology companies as it prepares to announce new appointments that will attract industry attention.
Potential triggers for investors include further validation of a company’s IP portfolio, expanded commercial partnerships, additional technology demonstrations, and onboarding of globally recognized management teams and advisors.
“We call this programmable video,” O’Hanlon said in an interview, adding that the company’s goal is to build an infrastructure that allows AI systems and video platforms to work faster, at lower cost, and with vastly improved personalization capabilities.

Proactive: Welcome to Proactive Investor. Hey everyone, I’m your host, Kelly Stevenson. I asked Finbar O’Hanlon, Founder and Head of Innovation at Ion Video Ltd (ASX:IOV), to come back after giving a talk on hyper-personalized video content and the direction of the market a few months ago.
The company is currently in talks with some of the world’s largest technology companies, including Meta and Alphabet, but we wanted to understand why investors should take note, too.
Finbarr O’Hanlon: Thank you so much, Kelly. I’m glad to be back.
Proactive: Talk to us about why these big companies are paying attention. Ion Video is still relatively small, with a market capitalization of around $40 million, but it’s clearly making waves.
Finbarr O’Hanlon: Fundamental changes are occurring globally, centered around AI and digital content. While most people now interact with AI through chat systems, another revolution is occurring in media and video.
Video currently accounts for 82% of all internet traffic. Historically, content has been produced for viewers in a one-to-many model. What is changing now is that consumers increasingly want content that is personalized to them.
People want unique news feeds, cooking shows, educational videos, and personalized experiences. Despite the large amount of content being uploaded, the platform is struggling because users still struggle to find content that is relevant to them.
This is where programmable video comes into play. Ion Video has developed a patented technology that allows you to dynamically assemble videos from modular components, rather than rendering a completely new video each time.
Proactive: How it works and why it’s important.
Finbarr O’Hanlon: A video file is essentially a database of thousands of individual pieces of information. We created technology that allows those pieces to be recorded, indexed, and reassembled dynamically and instantly.
This means users can request highly personalized content, such as a cooking show using the ingredients in their fridge, and the system can build that video in seconds.
Our platform acts as an orchestration layer between your AI system and your existing video library.
Finbarr O’Hanlon: Many AI companies can generate videos, but they still create entirely new rendering files, which is costly and time-consuming.
Ion Video’s patents date back to 2007 and cover virtual video technology that dynamically assembles content rather than rendering new files. Our intellectual property extends into 2038.
The difference is speed, efficiency, and reduced computing costs.
Proactive: We also mentioned the potential impact on data centers.
Finbarr O’Hanlon: yes. Currently, every variation of video requires separate rendering files, storage, and processing. Our technology allows you to generate countless dynamic variations of a single source file without creating new files.
This has the potential to significantly reduce large-scale storage, transcoding, and compute requirements.
Proactive: What are the next milestones for shareholders?
Finbarr O’Hanlon: Since reopening for business in November, we have launched our core products, built enterprise-grade infrastructure on AWS, strengthened our patent portfolio, and obtained third-party validation of our intellectual property.
We are currently focused on four areas:
Expanding our technology platform
Increased patent verification and validation
Grow your team with renowned industry experts
Promoting business negotiations with major global companies
We are disciplined and agile in our capital management and governance.
Proactive: I first heard about this on Proactive Investors. Ion Video Ltd (ASX:IOV) targets AI-powered programmable and hyper-personalized video content.
