IBM has set a goal of net-zero operational GHG emissions by 2030, with residual CO2 emissions below 350,000 tons. This requires reducing current operational emissions as much as possible through energy savings. This means increasing operational efficiency and energy savings, and reducing energy consumption.
One of the key challenges is data. When it comes to sustainability, it's often said that “you can't manage what you don't measure.” Jimmy McDonough, global energy manager at IBM Global Real Estate, knows tools powered by artificial intelligence (AI) are the key to addressing this.
In 2023, AI will enable Jimmy and the rest of IBM's team to capture and analyze IBM's energy data within a single auditable tool across a portfolio of more than 600 locations. This allows businesses to get reports and filter by location, geography, utilities, etc., among other things, to see where energy consumption is highest, where unexpected changes in energy occur, and where businesses can drive energy savings.
