Google's AI push: Tech giant not only integrates Android and hardware, but also DeepMind and research teams

AI News

Alphabet Inc.'s Google has announced a major internal reorganization aimed at accelerating advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and strengthening its position in the tech industry. The move includes the consolidation of various teams responsible for AI development, Android, and hardware products.

Google announced in a statement Thursday that it plans to combine its Research and DeepMind teams, which focus on building AI models. This integration is intended to streamline AI development efforts and foster closer collaboration between research and commercialization teams.

Additionally, Google will be moving its responsible AI team from its research division to DeepMind. This transition is aimed at ensuring that AI models are developed with safety in mind from the beginning, in line with global concerns about AI ethics and regulation.

This integration follows the successful development of Google's advanced AI model Gemini by the DeepMind team. Gemini, announced last year, boasts the ability to process a variety of data formats including video, audio, and text. However, Google has come under fire for past inaccuracies in image generation, forcing it to suspend certain image generation features.

Google's strategic realignment extends beyond AI, with the creation of a new team called “Platforms and Devices” that will oversee Pixel products, Android, Chrome, ChromeOS, Photos, and more. This reorganization underscores Google's commitment to integrating AI across its product ecosystem.

Rick Osterloh, who previously oversaw Google's hardware efforts, will lead the platforms and devices team, emphasizing the critical role of AI in shaping the user experience. Osterloh highlights the importance of integrating hardware, software and AI for breakthrough innovation, citing examples such as Pixel's camera technology.

The reorganization is also aimed at streamlining processes and accelerating product development cycles. Google seeks to leverage the latest AI research and models effectively by uniting teams and leadership around a unified goal. This approach is consistent with Google's broader strategy to stay at the forefront of AI innovation and adapt to the evolving technology landscape.

Google reassures that this integration does not mark a departure from its commitment to the broader Android ecosystem, while emphasizing the company's increasing focus on AI integration across its platform.
