Jakarta. Indonesia is seeking to deepen cooperation with China in the field of medical technology, with a focus on tuberculosis (TB) control, traditional medicine, biotechnology, and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital tools in health services.
Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said the two countries share similar priorities, particularly in improving the quality of health care and strengthening disease prevention.
“To achieve these goals, Indonesia and China can learn from each other while advancing mutually beneficial cooperation,” Budi said in a statement on Sunday. He added that Indonesia can draw lessons from China’s success in reducing TB incidence from moderate to low levels.
During his visit to Beijing on March 27, Mr. Budi met with Lei Haichao, Minister of the National Health Commission of China.
At the conference, Mr. Budi expressed his intention to accelerate the digital transformation of Indonesia’s healthcare system, especially in the management of patients’ clinical data. He also highlighted Indonesia’s interest in leveraging China’s strengths in AI and advanced technologies, including the potential use of brain-computer interface (BCI) systems for the prevention and recovery of stroke and other neurological diseases.
“AI will not replace doctors, but doctors who do not use AI will be left behind,” Budi said.
Indonesia and China have established various partnerships in the health sector in recent years. During Chinese Premier Li Qiang’s visit to Jakarta on May 25, 2025, the two governments signed an agreement on traditional Chinese medicine and tuberculosis control.
Cooperation extends beyond the government level and includes hospital and health worker exchange programs between the two countries.
