India primarily uses Claude.ai for software development and is ranked second in the world.

Applications of AI

NEW DELHI: India accounts for the second-highest usage of US AI company Anthropic’s Claude.ai globally, with most of its activities focused on technology and software development work, a report said.

According to a report by Anthropic, five out of the top 10 use cases in India fall under software development, with 45.2% of use cases revolving around computers and mathematical tasks.

The report highlighted that Indian users were twice as prevalent in the research conducted on the usage of Claude in CSS, HTML, and UI styling tasks, and 1.7 times more prevalent in building and debugging web applications.

Other India-specific use cases include the development of AI systems such as chatbots and workflow automation at a 1.5x rate, with users also adopting Claude for job searches, professional development, academic STEM work, and business planning, the report said.

The report noted that India’s artificial AI utilization index, a measure of whether the population is over or under-represented relative to the working-age population, is 0.22.

An AUI greater than 1 indicates that the country uses Claude more intensively than would be expected based on its population alone, and an AUI less than 1 indicates usage is lower than expected.

Globally, Claude usage remains focused on specific tasks, most of which are related to coding, the report said, adding that the US, India, Japan, UK and South Korea lead in overall Claude.ai usage.

“Some professionals, such as radiologists and therapists, may feel that some of their skills are improved by having AI take over some of their time-consuming tasks, potentially giving them more time to engage with patients and clients,” the report notes about evolving AI trends.

Others, such as data entry clerks, IT specialists, and travel agents, may see their roles simplified and their skills freed up as AI can fill a large part of their roles.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously said India is the second-largest market for AI companies in the world and “could be our biggest market.”

India has a huge advantage in adapting to emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence (AI), as it has a large young and tech-savvy population.

India’s youth are rapidly integrating advanced technology tools, making India a global hub for innovation and digital skills.
