China's top economic planner has pledged to deploy at least five industry-specific artificial intelligence (AI) models tailored to the energy sector as Beijing seeks to quickly integrate cutting-edge technologies into the power grid and the coal, oil and gas industries.
The National Development Commission (NDRC) said it aims to implement a framework that incorporates AI into the energy sector by 2027. The goal was to enhance the link between computing power and electricity, promote core technology breakthroughs, and expand the use of technology.
In a policy paper released with the National Energy Agency on Monday, NDRC said it would identify more than 10 replicable and competitive pilot projects and develop 100 application scenarios. The aim was to make China a global leader in AI adoption in the energy sector by 2030.
The two agencies have announced plans to establish AI research and innovation platforms for the energy sector and train experts with both energy and AI expertise.
China explores building funding systems to support AI research and applications over the next two years, and the agency added as Beijing has developed a unique innovation model tailored to national conditions and has sought to achieve early advances in smart energy.
