Kris Gopalakrishnan, co-founder of Infosys and chairman of Axilor Ventures, said India has the potential to emerge as one of the world’s top three countries in various aspects of artificial intelligence (AI), driven by a strong developer ecosystem and expanded focus on real-world applications.

Speaking to ANI on the sidelines of the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, Gopalakrishnan said the true impact of AI will be defined by the applications that are built and deployed using the technology.

“We believe that India can be among the top three countries in the world in various aspects of AI. The real impact of AI will be through the applications we deploy. India is a large market with a huge number of use cases and a huge pool of developers,” he said.

He pointed out that India’s size, coupled with its strong developer base, gives it a distinct advantage in leveraging AI. He said India is particularly positioned to lead at the application layer, where AI-driven solutions address practical, real-world problems.

“At the application level, India can actually become number one,” Gopalakrishnan said, highlighting India’s strengths in building and implementing AI solutions.

He also pointed to India’s efforts to develop advanced AI systems that go beyond English-only to include multimodal and multilingual models. He said the models are designed to reflect India’s linguistic diversity and address a wide range of use cases.

“When it comes to large-scale language models, we are working on multimodal, multilingual models that are very different from English-only models,” he said.

Mr. Gopalakrishnan emphasized the need for continued investment in research and innovation and highlighted low-power computing as a key area for future AI growth. He said advances in this field are key to developing next-generation processors that can power future AI systems.

“As we look to the future, low-power computing will be critical. By investing in research in this area, we can build the next generation of processors that will power AI development,” he added.

Gopalakrishnan also said that hosting global discussions and summits on AI in India will further strengthen India’s position in the global AI ecosystem.

“By bringing India into the global conversation about the direction and future of AI and discussing the opportunities it offers, India’s role in the global AI landscape will continue to grow,” he said.
