- Machine Learning Engineers earned an average salary of $142,858.57 in 2019, according to an analysis of all open jobs on Indeed. According to Indeed's analytics team, the average annual salary of a machine learning engineer has increased by $8,409 in just one year, an increase of 5.8%. The average annual salary of an algorithm engineer has risen to $109,313 this year, an increase of $5,201 (5%). Both salary increases are likely the result of companies spending more to attract talent to these key roles in a competitive AI job market.
- Machine Learning and Deep Learning Engineer is the most in-demand and popular job listed on Indeed in 2018-2019. Indeed's analytics team identified the top 10 job titles with the highest percentage of job descriptions that include the keywords “artificial intelligence” or “machine learning.” New titles making their first appearance on the list include Senior Data Scientist, Junior Data Scientist, Developer Consultant, Director of Data Science, and Lead Data Scientist. The five new job titles and skill combinations shown in the table below reflect organizations' growing expertise in using AI, deep learning, and machine learning to drive business outcomes.
- AI and machine learning job postings on Indeed grew 29.10% between May 2018 and May 2019. Indeed found that this rate of increase is significantly lower than the previous two years: during the same period, from May 2017 to May 2018, Indeed's AI job postings increased by 57.91%, and from May 2016 to May 2017, they increased by a staggering 136.29%.
- On Indeed, candidate searches for AI and machine learning (ML) related jobs have plateaued, dropping 14.5% between May 2018 and May 2019. In comparison, searches increased 32% between May 2017 and May 2018, and 49.1% between May 2016 and May 2017. There are both demand-side and supply-side explanations for the 14.5% drop. On the demand side, the widespread adoption and maturation of AI and machine learning in organizations is impacting the diversity of skills being hired for. The 14.5% drop reflects the broadening base of skills companies need to get the most out of AI and machine learning. On the supply side, potential job seekers are realizing that the base of skills they need to hire is broadening, and job listings that are more than two years old are quickly becoming outdated. Finding candidates with great capabilities and potential for AI and machine learning roles requires more than just relying on job listings. Eightfold does just that by utilizing machine learning algorithms to match candidates with the best capabilities and potential for every open role an organization has.
