In February, Dale held a workshop for UC faculty on using ChatGPT in the classroom. Many professors are unaware of the capabilities, limitations, and opportunities that chatbots offer. The purpose of this workshop was to help instructors learn how to influence their classes both positively and negatively.
“It can be used in unique ways by professors. In class, ChatGPT responses can be used as a starting point for discussion. Students can critique and extend the basic responses created by ChatGPT. You can do it,” Dale said. “However, one of the big dangers for students is that ChatGPT can provide false or false information.”
To test this, Dale used a chatbot to answer some organic chemistry questions, but said he received the wrong answers. If he didn’t know the answer, he wouldn’t have known the information was wrong.
Dale said chatbots tend to make up sources when users ask for sources on a particular topic.
ChatGPT uses texts written by others without attribution, so if a student submits a report generated by ChatGPT, it will be considered plagiarism.
“Turnitin, the plagiarism detection software that UC uses, can now detect AI writing,” said Dale.
Dale said he is hesitant to recommend ChatGPT as a learning tool because it often provides incorrect information, but it can be a good editor for checking grammar and syntax. .
“In my opinion, ChatGPT and tools like it are like calculators,” Dale said. “Sometimes it’s important to learn math without a calculator.Sometimes it’s important to learn how to do calculations with a calculator. Learning about is still very important, but we can’t ignore it, so learning how to work and learn with AI tools will also be important.”
