A new Gallup poll shows a growing share of workers believe that AI and other cutting-edge technologies could make their current jobs obsolete. Should I worry about my job?
A 2017 Gallup poll found that only 13% of workers were concerned about technology obsolescence. This number remained relatively stable for several years, but increased by 7 points from 2021 to 2022.
“The recent rise in people’s concerns that their jobs will become obsolete is almost entirely driven by workers with college degrees, with the share concerned jumping from 8 percent to 20 percent. ” Added Gallup report. “At the same time, anxiety among workers without a college degree has remained virtually unchanged at 24%. As a result, while non-college workers were previously much more concerned about technological substitution than workers with a college degree, these groups now express similar levels of concern.”
Many of our college-educated respondents are knowledge workers, whose jobs are potentially vulnerable to the new generation of chatbots, including: Chat GPTcan generate code, text, and even images in response to simple prompts. “Advances in computers’ ability to imitate human language, recently revealed with the release of ChatGPT last November, may be changing stereotypes about what computers can do in the workplace,” the report concludes. “It’s no longer just robots replacing humans in warehouses and assembly lines, but has expanded to online programs that perform sophisticated language-based tasks, such as writing computer code.”
