Cameras are connected to a command center that uses artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). In one demonstration, Honeywell showed how connected video camera technology can be used to detect smartphone thieves using markers such as clothing color and vehicle type. The system can analyze vehicle numbers even from a distance.
Video feeds can also be linked to criminal databases, allowing criminals to be tracked without violating residents’ privacy. A police officer wears a body camera on him that is also connected to the system, and pressing the SOS button sends a video feed to the command center for further action.
As part of the Safe City project, the Bengaluru Police are using the same technology to protect citizens from unidentified objects. They also set up “safety islands” in easily accessible public areas. Citizens can contact the department from an emergency phone box by dialing 1122. In the second phase, the city of Bangalore will additionally receive 3,400 video cameras, 115 body-worn cameras and 20 safety devices. An island, two additional drones, a permanent command center and a data center. The project was awarded last year to private bidder Honeywell for Rs Rs 496.67 core and has been implemented under the ‘Nirbhaya Scheme’.
