New courses in the College of Liberal Arts starting in Fall 2023 will be taught using artificial intelligence (AI) tools.

AI as a Classroom, an advanced fourth-year seminar, is offered as part of the Book and Media Studies Program at St. Michael’s College.

This seminar will address various issues related to artificial intelligence and its growing impact on society, including the ethics of AI and its impact on culture and media.

The course is the brainchild of Paolo GranataAssociate Professor and Program Coordinator in the Book and Media Studies Program, with a history of working in experimental pedagogy.

During the pandemic, Granata, who also founded the Media Ethics Lab and leads the Toronto School Initiative and the 3D Gutenberg Lab, used virtual reality technology to facilitate experiential learning. He sees new AI courses as a way to expand exploration of these new media and learning spaces.

“This is an exciting opportunity for students to explore the cutting edge of AI and its educational potential,” said Granata.

The seminar will also address provocative questions about the role of teaching in the creation and curation of learning experiences, and the potential of AI to enhance learning and promote active thinking.
