Hidden AI: Even as employers encourage its use, lack of training overshadows its use.

Applications of AI

Research shows that AI is rapidly taking hold in modern work, yet employees are not receiving guidance or training to encourage its use

SANTA MONICA, Calif. – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Cornerstone OnDemand, a leader in workforce agility solutions, today announced the results of a study on the behavior, usage, and disclosure of AI in the workplace. Key findings show that while AI is rapidly becoming an integral part of modern work (80% of US and UK workers each use AI), its use largely occurs in silence.

Most workers do not want to disclose their use of AI. 57% of US and 81% of UK workers are reluctant to tell their managers or colleagues, and only 54% of US workers have told senior colleagues about the use of AI. But AI silence is not due to embarrassment, shame, or fear of job loss. 76% of US workers and 38% of UK workers have never felt embarrassed about using AI in the workplace. In both regions, 64% of US employees feel some level of organizational encouragement or support to use AI in the workplace, as do 62% of UK employees.

Rather, the data points to a widespread lack of training and guidance as a key barrier to disclosure. Only 44% of US employees receive AI training and tools, only 16% receive training frequently, and 51% of UK employees receive no or very little training. Employees want more direction from their organizations. 65% of US employees want training to build AI skills and confidence, and 65% of UK employees want AI training.

“Organizations and individuals alike want to take advantage of the efficiencies that AI provides, but investing heavily in AI tools is not the only answer, as training and governance systems are critical to success,” said Mike Bollinger, vice president of strategic initiatives at Cornerstone. “While this research confirms employee desire for training, particularly around AI, it also shows wide disparities in who is receiving training and the important adjustments that need to be made across the organization.”

Additional important findings from the study.

  • On average, about 73% of AI users say they don’t necessarily disclose their usage to managers or co-workers.

  • Only 33% of employees say they are often or always encouraged to use AI in the workplace.

  • In the UK, 51% have never or rarely received AI training or tools. Only 8% receive it all the time. In the US, 33% of people who are encouraged to use AI in the workplace do not receive training to support their use.

  • UK pay gap in training support: 16% of people earning less than £15,000 always or often receive AI training, compared to 47% of people earning more than £55,001.
